The first plate had 293 colonies, whereas the second had 158 colonies. Suggest reasonable sources of error.

Your dilution is still too concentrated. You have colonies being “on top of each other” or formed from more than one bacterium.
Go with about one-tenth that concentration. The idea here is to get about 20-30 colonies on your plate.
