A jewelry store buys small boxes in which to wrap items that they sell. The diagram below shows one of the boxes. The base of the box is a rectangle with sides 12 cm and 5 cm in length. Find the lateral area and the surface area of the box to the nearest square cm.

Answer

Lateral area = 2 *
(2.51 * 11) + 2 * (2.51 * 8)
Lateral area = 2 * (27.61) + 2 * (20.08)
Lateral area = 55.22 + 40.16
Lateral area = 95.38 (or 95 cm^2)

Surface area = 95.38 +
2 * (11 * 8)
Surface area = 95.38 + 2 * (88)
Surface area = 95.38 + 176
Surface area = 271.38 (or 271 cm^2)

I know the lateral area
does not match any of the answers, but my answer is correct, I
double checked it in a few different ways. Lateral area, as you may
know is the surface area without including the area of the bases.
The way that the picture is drawn, the bases are the sides that are
11 by 8. If you move the box so that the bases are the 2.51 by 8
sides, then your lateral area becomes equal to:

Lateral area = 2 * (2.51 * 11) + 2 * (11 * 8)
Lateral area = 2 * (27.61) + 2 * (88)
Lateral area = 55.22 + 176
Lateral area = 231.22 (or 231 cm^2)

And then the correct answer is d.

But the way the picture is drawn, my original answer is
correct.

I hope this helped

laterel area= 12 x 5= 60 cm2

For surface area height of the box is required which is not
given in the question.
