A “swing” ride at a carnival consists of chairs that are swung in a circle by 12.0-m cables attached to a vertical rotating pole, as the drawing shows. (θ = 62.5°) Suppose the total mass of a chair and its occupant is 230 kg.

(a) Determine the tension in the cable attached to the chair.

(b) Find the speed of the chair.

    Tension T = mg /cos θ = 230*9.8/ cos62.5 = 4881.4N

    b)

    R = L sin θ = 12 sin 62.5 = 10.64 m

    v = √ (Rg tan θ) = √ (10.649.8tan 62.5)

    Speed , v = 14.2m/s
