Any juices/drinks without citric acid besides water?

My two year old has hand, foot and mouth disease and wont eat solids and needs something more substantial than water. The citric acid in the juices we have really irritates the sores in his mouth. Are there any juices/drinks that do not contain citric acid?

  • There are many juices that don’t contain citric acid, but they may contain other acids.

Mango juice is very tasty and I don’t think it contains much acid. Apricot and apple juices come to mind, too.

Milk has no significant amount of acid in it and is much more substantial than water, and it shouldn’t irritate the sores at all. You can mix juice and milk or juice and cream to make tasty smoothies that have far less of an acid bite. Mango juice or pureed mangoes and cream can taste great. Same for strawberries and raspberries. Making really cold drinks could help to soothe sores, too.

  • Any flavored water without citric acid?

  • Citric acid is used in many drinks, and is really hard to avoid. You may wanna try something altogether different such as coconut water or a Cuban “NA” malt beverage like Hatuey or Malta Goya which is high in B vitamins. Check out your nearest hispanic or African market for these beverages.

There are a number of milk substitutes. Aside from soy milk, there are rice milk, almond milk, oat milk, hemp milk, and possibly some others. You might also try tea, regular, green, black, and/or herbal. Try finding them in large grocery stores and health food stores.
