Bond Length & Dipole Moment?

NetherCraft 0

Use the following table to rank these bonds in order of decreasing bond length:

Bond/Bond strength:

H-H:436

Cl-Cl:243

H-Br:366

H-N:391

I-I:151

C-I:216

Rank them in Longest to Shortest bond length.

The dipole moment, meu, of HBr (a polar covalent molecule) is 0.82 D (debye), and its percent ionic character is 12.1%. Estimate the bond length of the H-Br bond in picometers.

1 D = 3.34 * 10^-30 C*m

in a bond with 100% ionic character, q = 1.6 * 10^-19 C

  • So it goes:

    I-I

    C-I

    CL-CL

    H-Br

    H-N

    H-H

  • The dipole moment |m| is equal to the charge in coulombs times the bond distance in meters. |m| = D x R The result would be in coulombs-meters. To convert to debyes, divide by 3.34×10^-30
