By how much will the box compress the weaker spring?

NetherCraft 0

A 1.0 kg box moves back and forth on a horizontal frictionless surface between two different springs, as shown in the accompanying figure. The box is initially pressed against the stronger spring, compressing it 3.4 cm , and then is released from rest.

A) By how much will the box compress the weaker spring? (in cm)

B) What is the maximum speed the box will reach?

1 Answer

  • What are the spring constants?

    A) PE1 = PE2

    1/2 k1 (3.4cm)^2 = 1/2 k2 (x2)^2 where x = distance weaker spring compressed

    B) KE = PE

    1/2 1.0 kg v^2 = 1/2 k1 (3.4cm)^2
