Can I get a spare Honda key made at Home Depot or do I have to go to the dealership?

• You HAVE to get the key from the dealership. The key has an engine immobilizer in it, that if not programmed, the key will not start the car. The way to check if you have a chip in your key, turn the key (the one you have now), to acc and you should see a small green key on the dash. This is showing the communication between the key and the immobilizer. It will also say if the car has the immobilizer system on the window sticker. You probably have a copy in your glove box.

• You can get the key cut at Home Depot but you will have to program it yourself.

  NOTE: The blank keys are expensive. Mine cost about $25 apiece.

  Look in your owners manual for how to do it.

  I have a Ford truck and all I had to do to program the key was:

  Put the original key in the ignitiion and turn it on but don’t start the engind.

  Turn the key off.

  Put in the new key and turn it on within 5 seconds of the original key.

  Turn the key off

  Turn the new key on and start the engine.

  Usually programming the keys is as simple as that. The Ford dealership wanted about $50 for a new “programmed key”

• Very few US market Hyundai vehicles have chips, and of those, only the very latest models. The Elantra is not chipped. With that said, your best bet would be a locksmith as there are 17 possible blanks for the vehicle depending on what model it is…and the last 5 are not available to retail stores such as Home Depot, Ace, etc.

• You have to go the Honda dealer. If Home Depot can do it, then I didn’t have to pay so much for the late model hondas’ keys.

• If the key has a computer chip on it (anti theft resistor) you need to go to Honda. Otherwise Home Depot can make a Honda key that would look just like an original key and work perfectly.

• It is not a normal key, in that it has a rib up the middle that is not cut. The chip is in the remote control head, which can be opened and the chip and switches moved to a new head, but you need the key cut on a machine that preserves the center rib, probably a feature to make key copying harder outside the dealer. I got a body in eBay but where can I get it cut?

• The chip in the old key housing is fairly easy to remove and place in the new housing. No programming needed. You will still need to program the keyless entry part but that s easy, and of course have a local locksmith cut it. Don t let Honda do anything to your car. They are crooks. They wanted $85 plus labor to replace the cabin air filter. I got one for $7 and did it myself!

• Ace Hardware could cut one for $89.95 with programming, $25 for door-only key that won’t work ignition. I think I’ll get both, so I can hide a good one in the car and use the door key in my wallet, in case I loose my keys!
