“Rope an ole blue norther and milk it til it’s dry. Bull dawg the Mississippi. Pin it’s ears down flat. Long before you take this cowboys hat.”

  • ‘rope an ol blue norther’ — a blue norther is a cold front that comes from the north pole and swoops down across the country. — so he is saying you can try to rope the wind, which is impossible, like taking a true cowboy’s hat.

‘milk it til its dry’ — the norther can blow from the north pole until it is all snowed/rained out (a looooong time) and still not have the cowboy’s hat.

‘bull dawg the mississippi” — is a roping phrase that means to tie up the legs of a calf or cow — you cannot pin down the mississippi river, like you can’t take a cowboy’s hat.

  • Blue Northern

  • C C is wrong…

In the case of this song. A blue norther is a cold front, but in this song he is talking about the legendary bull/cow. It is known to be the fastest, strongest, most agile. Therefore saying you’ll catch it and milk it before you take this Cowboys hat.

  • Can’t rope the wind, and can stop the Mississippi. Bulldogging is a rodeo event where you literally wrestle a steer to the ground

  • Have you ever milked a bull? I mean, you can try but you’re not gonna get what you wanted 😛
