ESPN Fantasy Football… OPRK?

Exactly what is OPRK (green number = good matchup/red number = bad?), and how do I use it in setting my roster from week to week?

  • It means opponent rank against that position. For example, I have two players from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Mike Williams’ OPRK is a green “28th” because Atlanta has a bad secondary and pass defense. LeGarrette Blount’s OPRK is a red “9th” becuase Atlanta has a good run defense. The OPRK is specific to each position and can give you a hint as to whether or not your player might put up good numbers against his opponent. And yes, green means good and red means bad. However, there are still players who are must starts week-to-week, regardless of OPRK.

For week 1, it is the rank for the average number of fantasy points per game given up to that position over the course of 2009 for the team that the fantasy player is going up against in week 1. For example, if you are looking at a WR’s OPRK, if it says 1, then the opposing team gave up the fewest total fantasy points to WRs in all of 2009 (Jets), if it says 32, then that team gave up the highest total fantasy points to WRs in all of 2009 (Titans). Same goes with QB, RB, etc. positions, that’s how you can have two players on the same team with a different OPRK. After a couple weeks, it will be based on 2010 totals. You’re right that ESPN doesn’t spoon-feed 3 or 4 stats to you like yahoo does, but instead has a ton of extra features that you need to sort of learn on your own. I just had to look at the opposing teams for a few minutes and figured out what OPRK mean myself after a little while. If this is your first time using ESPN then you might have some problems with it at first, but by week 4 or 5 you should be used to it. I had one league move to ESPN last year and a few weeks into the season I was b****ing about how we moved to ESPN from yahoo. However, by the end of the year I loved it and converted the league I manage from yahoo to ESPN this year.

  • Is OPRK good for DS? ex: LA @ DET ..DET’s OPRK is 28th Green, is that good for LA or does this mean that DET DS is good vs. LA offense and should have good DS points?
