A rotating uniform cylindrical platform of mass 230 kg and radius 5.6 m slows down from 3.8 rev/s to rest in 16 s when the driving motor is disconnected.

Estimate the power output of the motor (hp) required to maintain a steady speed of 3.8 rev/s.

  • T = Iα, where T:torque, I: moment of inertia,

    α: angular acceleration

    I(disk): ½ mr² = ½ (230)(5.6)² = 3606 kg-m²

    α = (3.8)(2π)/16 = [(3.8)/8]π, T = Iα = 3606(3.8/8)π

    = 5381 N m

    Power output of motor: P = Tω, but

    ω = (3.8)(2π) = 7.6π m/s

    P = Tω = 5381(7.6π) = 128 kW

    note: 1 hp = 0.746 kW, =>

    P = 128 kW (1hp/0.746kW) = 171.5 hp
