For a 610 kg vehicle, the approximate minimum static friction force to complete this turn is?

Wings on race cars push them into the track. The increased normal force makes large friction forces possible. At one Formula One racetrack, cars turn around a half-circle with diameter 190m at 68m/s .

  • In turning thru a circular arc the Centripetal force requirement must be met by the static friction force on tires or car will slip (along radius of curve).

    D = 190 m

    R = 190/2 = 95 m

    Fc = mV²/R = 610(68)²/95 = 29,691 ≈ 29,700 N = total static friction force (all 4 tires) or ≈ 7430 N per tire ANS
