Let x represent the unknown number.
2/3 X – 9 = 7
2/3 X – 9 + 9 = 7 + 9
2/3 X = 16
2/3 X (3/2) = 16 (3/2)
X = 24

“If 9 is subtracted from two thirds of a number, the result is 7.”
(⅔)x – 9 = 7
(⅔)x = 16
x = 16 × (3/2)
= 24

Use algebra. Call the number you don’t know x. So:
(2/3 * x) – 9 = 7
2/3 * x = 7 + 9 = 16
Divide both sides by 2/3
x = 16 divided by 2/3 = 24

9 + 7 is 16
16 is two thirds of what?

24
9+7= 16= 2 thirds of a number
16/2= 8= 1 third
24= 1 third x 3 = 3 thirds

24. Two thirds of 24 is 16. 9 subtracted from 16 is 7.

Use a variable:
(2/3)x – 9 = 7
+9 +9
(3/2)(2/3)x = 16(3/2)
x = 24

Let that number be x
Then 2/3(x)9 = 7
simplifying,
2x/3=16
2x=16(3)=48
=>x=48/2 = 24
THe number was 24!
