Sister chromatids may drift apart
after being synthesized.

Cohesin proteins ensure that the
sister chromatids stay connected with each other, during cell
division. In the absence of cohesin, the cell cannot control the
seggregation of sister chromatids as a result of which the spindle
attachement is unclear (if the spindle attached is from a different
pole or not cannot be ascertained by the cell).
