  • x = number of women to hire

    (5+x)/(20+x) = 40/100 = 2/5

    25+5x = 40 +2x

    3x = 15 ==> x = 5

  • I assume you’re going to expand the team, rather than firing some of the men.

    Right now you have 20×(1/4) = 5 women and 20×(3/4) = 15 men

    The simplest way to solve this is to look at the men, since their number isn’t going to change. The new team will have the same 15 men as the old team, but they will now constitute only 60% of the team (since 40% of the new team will be women). So, what size team “S” will 15 men be 60% of?

    15 = 0.6S

    S = 15/0.6 = 25

    Since the new team must have 25 people, and you already have 20, hire five women. The new team will have 10 women and 15 men, which is 40% women, as desired.

  • 5 woman (25%) 15 men (75%)

    20*0.6=12 This sum shows the total without 40%.

    You need 12 men, 8 women, if you want exactly 40% of your team to be women.
