lol..I have seen this question a few times now. He is thanking the fact that he was on the side of the road selling turnip greens because if he had not been doing that…then he would have not crossed paths with the woman. If she hadn’t stopped for directions because he was there selling them he would not have met her

Turnip greens are the above ground part of turnips. Once, in NC my neighbor asked me why I was throwing away the ‘good part’ of the turnips. Being from the north, I only ate the bulb part of turnips.
He says thank god for good directions and turnip greens because he just happened to be out on the side of the road selling turnip greens from a flat bed truck when the hot cнιcκ needed directions.

Good Directions

I’m from the South and to my knowledge that is no cliche just what it says…turnip greens. If it weren’t for him selling the turnip greens he would have never been sitting there to meet this girl!

because he was sitting there selling turnip greens from the back of his truck when she pulled up… see the lyrics below… she came back to him at the end of the song, if it weren’t for his good directions and turnip greens, she wouldn’t be there with him.
I was sittin’ there sellin’ turnips on a flatbed truck
Crunchin’ or a pork rind when she pulled up
She had to be thinkin’ “This is where the rednecks come from”
She had Hollywood written on her license plate
She was lost and lookin’ for the interstate
Needin’ directions and I was the man for the job
[Chorus]
I told her way up yonder past the caution light
There’s a little country store with an old Coke sign
You gotta stop in and ask Miss Bell for some of her sweet tea
Then a left will take you to the interstate
But a right will bring you right back here to me
I was sittin’ there thinkin’ ‘bout her pretty face
Kickin’ myself for not catchin’ her name
I threw my hat and thought, “You fool, that coulda been love”
I knew my old Ford couldn’t run her down
She probably didn’t like me anyhow
So I watched her disappear in a cloud of dust.
[Chorus]
I told her way up yonder past the caution light
There’s a little country store with an old Coke sign
You gotta stop in and ask Miss Bell for some of her sweet tea
Then a left will take you to the interstate
But a right will bring you right back here to me
Is this Georgia heat playin’ tricks on me
Or am I really seein’ what I think I see
The woman of my dreams comin’ back to me
She went way up yonder past the caution light
Don’t know why, but somethin’ felt right
When she stopped in and asked Miss Bell for some of her sweet tea
Mama gave her a big ‘ol glass and sent her right back here to me
Thank God for good directions…and turnip greens

a lot of people eat greens….they are the tops of turnips, they also eat the turnip but the greens are by them selves
