You may have an alkaline – acid imbalance. Do you have a lot of heartburn along with it? I never heard of craving baking soda with pregnancy. §
Pica is a condition whereby you crave non foodstuffs. it can affect pregnant women, who may consume clay. It can also happen to people who are not pregnant. Sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient in baking soda. You can overdose on it if you are not careful, and it can affect the absorption of other medications as it changes stomach acidity. I would suggest you go to your doctor and discuss this habit. Have some bloodwork done as well, to make sure that you are not craving it as a result of a metabolic imbalance.
There is a trend among athletes to perform ‘soda loading’ prior to an event in the mistaken belief that it reduces the amount of lactic acid build up by physical activity. Some athletes and coaches believe that drinking baking soda prior to competition (“soda loading”) helps them perform for longer periods of time. This is extremely dangerous, and in addition to side effects, it actually makes the athletes unable to perform.
Overdoses of sodium bicarbonate can result in muscle weakness, spasms, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, nervous irritability, frequent urination and convulsions in extreme cases.Source(s): RN
