I see people putting lines of solder paste along lines of pads to match up with the pins of SMD chips, but if the solder paste is conductive, then doesn’t that connect all of the pins on the board? Why doesn’t it?

Soldering paste is NON-CONDUCTIVE.
Solder paste is a flux that cleanses the soldering surfaces and helps in having a good, permanent soldering joint.

Two type of flux…
[1] Resin type is non conductive.
[2] Acid compound type contains ZnCl2 is conductive under high voltage.
A good practice for a good solder job, solder joints need to be cleaned with solution after solder to remove all the flux. Resin type flux only effective on solder copper type joint but not good to solder steel surface joint. The acid type can solder most metals except aluminum.

yes solder paste is conductive but that is not its purpose solder paste is used as a cleaner prior to a solder joint it cleans the two metals prior to fusion fusion is the soldering or connecting of two joints with a flow of a metallic compound know as solder I did not make solder and so i am not sure of its properties suffice to say it does have a lower melting point than the two metals that it welds together creating an Electrical joint in an Electrical circuit and if you ask yahoo they will more than be happy to provide you with the Electrical breakdown of Flux as it is known hope that helps

The purpose of solder paste, in liquid form known as flux; is to burn off contaminants when heat is applied. As such it also helps the solder to flow. It is not by nature conductive; although there are two major types: one for electronics, and one (very acid) for plumbing copper pipe.
In older electronics work; you could buy the solder with a (rosin core) flux built in. Handy but generally larger in diameter.

Is solder paste conductive or what?

Solder paste is stuff which makes it possible to stick the two metals together. It allows the solder to stick to the metal surfaces.

I usually use a very small (20) watt iron with a 1/8 in. pointed tip….Usually grind the tips like I want them…..Radio Shack usually has some .010 Dia. rosin core solder…(Not best quality but will work) They also usually have a device called (Helping Hands) A little holder with small clips , A magnafying glass and a light…If not try Harbor Tool…..If you can’t see it good and hold it very still you probably won’t get it done….LOTSA’ Luck
