  • Radioactive elements such as radium and polonium have a mass number much more than twice the atomic number, i.e. the number of neutrons is much more than the number of protons. The atom tends to break into parts so as to balance this. When neutrons are bombarded upon such atoms, they divide into atoms of lighter elements. In this process, a high amount of energy is liberated. For example, when neutrons are bombarded upon U-236 atoms, these atoms break into Kr-92 (Krypton) and Ba-141(Barium). The rest of the mass of 3u is converted into energy. The process continues as a chain reaction to further U-236 atoms and, eventually, a lot of energy is liberated. This energy is used for various purposes. This process is called nuclear fission since atomic nuclei split into smaller atoms. The branch of chemistry associated the nucleus of an atom (including nuclear fusion and fission) is called nuclear chemistry.
