True or false: Comic relief is only found in comedies?

  • Totally false. Many serious works put in a comic relief character to give the audiences a break. This adds to the overall enjoyment of the work. I’m sure you’ve watched serious movies where just one line is inserted in to break the tension? Or one character does a facial expression that gets the entire audience laughing.

  • False. Almost every drama, like ‘King Lear’ or certain ‘Star Trek’ scenes, has comic relief to keep its audience’s attention. Shakespeare didn’t want people walking out or the king to cry his eyes out at every scene. TOO much drama makes the whole thing seem less dramatic: more like a sob-story.
