  • Do you take care of him/her, do you care about them or do you ignore their problems, concerns, hunger, etc or do you only take care of yourself?

  • To be your brother’s keeper means that family should look out for each other. Yes, you can use any family member, or even friend or neighbor. We use brother because the phrase comes from the Bible story of Cain and Abel. Cain was the older brother. He was a shepherd and Abel was a farmer. For some reason (every preacher will give you a different reason) God liked Abel’s offering of grain better than Cain’s sacrifice of a lamb. Cain got mad and killed Abel. When God came looking, he asked Cain, “Where is your brother?” Cain answered, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” But, of course, the answer should yes. Cain only asked because he was a murderer and did not understand taking care of other people.

  • The phrase originally comes from the book of Genesis in the Old Testament of the Bible. After killing his brother Abel in a fit of jealousy, Cain lied to God about knowing where Abel was. He said to God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (In other words, am I supposed to watch my brother, take care of him, and know his whereabouts at all times?)

In the Jodi Picoult novel “My Sister’s Keeper”, and the film based in the novel, the expression is ironic. Anna was conceived to keep her sister Kate alive. But she sues her parents for medical emancipation so that Kate can die in peace. In so doing, she is truly loyal to her sister’s wishes and needs — truly her sister’s keeper.

  • Like a zoo keeper who looks after the animals and makes sure they’re not coming to harm or destroying their enclosures, you are supposed to keep the same watchful eye on your younger siblings.

In older times, you could be legally responsible for your younger sibling’s actions, so you “kept” them (watched what they were doing and stopped them if they were doing something wrong).

I suppose it’s like being a glorified baby-sitter without getting paid.

  • your in charge of them

    you help them

    you watch over them

*ur still ur siblings keeper even if their older than u*

  • Keeping the sister (or brother) from harm.
