What does the ambulance term A&O times 0 mean?

• here, we go by aao, which mean awake alert and oriented.. and we go up to 4, basically, that person is unconsious, but it seems that it would be easier just to say unconsious male/female…. you ask the pt everyday questions to decide what their aao is… date, time, president, name, birthdate, etc.. common questions that anyone would know…

  While listening to my police scanner, an ambulance paramedic reported to the Hospital that a patient was A&O times 0. What does that mean?

• Where I work, I usually describe a patient as AOx3 when they are awake, alert, able to answer all questions appropriately, know where they are, the current date, and who they are. You can add a 4th (for AOx4), and that would be if they are able to describe recent events leading up to the accident, illness, or whatever.

  To avoid confusion, if a patient is not AOx3 (or 4) I describe exactly what the deviation is. For example…lethargic/oriented x3, alert/confused as to date or time, lethargic/confused as to person, etc (I’m sure you get the idea). That resolves the question of describing a patient as AOX0. Is the paramedic trying to say that the patient is unconscious (if so, stating unconscious would be far more effective), or simply that they are alert but not oriented at all? More than likely, they are trying to state the latter, but it just saves the confusion.

• A&O refers to Awake and Oriented. So if the say the patient is A&O x O that means the person is awake, but they do not know who they are, where they are, or what time it is.

• A&O refers to ‘alert and oriented.’ most people are A&O x 3 meaning they are alert and oriented to person, place, time. if they are A&O x 0 it means they don’t know who they are, where they are, or what time/day it is.
