What is John Lee Hooker referring to (or what does he mean) when he says “milk, cream, and alcohol?”?

The song is “it serves me right to suffer.”

  • He’s singing about the memories of days gone by and how he misses his woman. He’s nervous and can’t sleep and his doctor prescribes those for him to drink so he may be able to fall asleep.

    Source(s): Just my interpretation.
  • I agree with KMAN – sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

Warm milk is a common treatment for insomnia – it has triptophane (the same drug in turkey that makes you sleepy).

And of course, a little booze will help some folks sleep.

    Great song though!

  • It goes down smooth but turns in your stomach.
