What time does ‘late afternoon’ begin ..1pm, 2pm,3pm,4pm,5pm or 5:30pm?

• There is no rule, but I consider afternoon to be from 12:01 (obviously) to 5PM, which I consider the beginning of “evening”.

  Generally, I consider 4PM-5PM to be “late afternoon”.

  But that is arbitrary, and it is just me. I know some people who think 2PM is still ‘morning’. So even if you could pinpoint the time, it doesn’t mean the person you have an appointment with is thinking the same thing…

• Late Afternoon

• I often have a similar discussion with my students when they ask “What time does evening start?” The general consensus is that the time at which afternoon ends and evening begins depends on the season and the person.

  In winter when daylight hours are shorter, we may feel that the evening begins as early as, say, 5.00 p.m. whereas at the height of summer it is pushed back.

  Many people fix the start of evening as being the end of the day’s work or school. In my family growing up we used to say that the evening began after the early news on tv. In France where I live now shops and businesses often stay open until 7.00 p.m. so the evening begins when we are still at work.

  Of course the reason for waxing on about evening is that late afternoon is what falls just before. If we take it that the afternoon officially begins at midday and that the evening begins at between 5.00-6.30 p.m. according to season and local tradition, then early afternoon would be until about 2.30 p.m. mid-afternoon around 2.30-4.00 p.m. and late afternoon 4.00 p.m. until the start of the evening.

• Afternoon starts at Noon. Early afternoon is Noon to 2pm. Mid Afternoon is 2-4pm. Late afternoon is 4-6pm (Evening News is at 6pm)

• Well, If noon is about 12:00-1:00, And afternoon is about 1:00-4:00, I think late afternoon would be from 4:00-5:30. 5:30-8/9ish is evening, And from 9ish on it’s night. Good Question.
